Wagner Moura adds another historic win for Brazil at the Golden Globes

Brazil had much to celebrate at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards. Wagner Moura won best male performance in a motion picture drama for his role in The Secret Agent, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. It marked the first time a Brazilian actor has won in the category.

In his acceptance speech, Moura not only thanked his fellow nominees, but also paid tribute to his country. Speaking in Portuguese, he said: “For everyone in Brazil who is watching this right now, long live Brazil and long live Brazilian culture.” Moura also won best actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in The Secret Agent.

The Secret Agent also won best motion picture in a non-English language. The political thriller, set during Brazil’s military dictatorship, follows Armando, a professor who becomes entangled in the authoritarian regime and endures intense fear as he tries to protect himself and his family.

Brazil has become increasingly present on the awards circuit since the release of I’m Still Here (2024). The film won best foreign-language film at both the Golden Globes and the 2025 Academy Awards. Fernanda Torres won best female performance in a motion picture drama and was nominated for best actress in a leading role at the Oscars.
